Making Sense of Life, Death & the Journey Beyond

Who Was Emanuel Swedenborg?

Emanuel Swedenborg, born in 1688 in Stockholm, underwent a profound spiritual transformation in the mid-1740s that reshaped his life’s work. Initially a respected scientist and thinker, Swedenborg’s journey took a dramatic turn following a series of mystical visions and dreams. He claimed to have conversations with angels and spirits, culminating in a vision of Christ in 1745, which he saw as a divine mandate to write about spiritual matters.

His most influential works, “Heaven and Hell” and “True Christianity”, explored the nature of the afterlife and offered a unique interpretation of Christianity. He emphasized the importance of both faith and good deeds for salvation, challenging traditional Christian doctrines. Swedenborg’s theology, centered on the interconnectedness of the spiritual and physical worlds, introduced the idea of correspondences, suggesting that physical reality is a reflection of spiritual truths.

Passing away in 1772 in London, Swedenborg left a significant legacy. His extensive theological writings, emphasizing love, faith, and the interconnectedness of all things, laid the foundation for the New Church. His work continues to influence religious thought, as well as fields like psychology and literature, drawing interest for its depth and visionary insights. Emanuel Swedenborg remains a seminal figure in the history of spiritual exploration.
