To possess goodness and truth is not merely to know
them, or hold them in our memory and carry them on
our lips, but to respond to them from the heart. Nor are
they ours when we seek them for the sake of amassing
prestige and wealth. In that case it is not goodness and
truth we seek but position and riches; we view goodness
and truth as the means of acquiring them.
