People who are regenerating and becoming spiritual
usually have tremendous difficulty seeing truth. Good
coming from the Lord influences them, but the influence
of truth is not as strong. So a parallelism and correspondence
exists between the Lord and the goodness
in us, but not between the Lord and the truth we know.
The main reason is that people regenerating do not know
what is good, and even if they did know, they would not
believe it at heart. As long as goodness is hard to see,
truth is too, since all truth develops out of goodness. To
speak more plainly, such people know very dimly if at all
that the Lord is goodness itself; that everything having
to do with love for him and charity for their neighbor is
good; and that everything that affirms and supports these
ideas is true. In fact, they even cherish doubts about it
and are willing to listen to arguments against it.
