When we are united with the Lord, we unite not with his
actual, supreme divinity but with his divine humanity.
We cannot form any idea at all of the Lord’s most sublime
divinity, which soars so far above our thoughts that it
dies out completely and disappears; but of his divine humanity
we are able to form a picture. Our thoughts and
feelings bind us to something we have some notion of,
not to something we cannot have any notion of.
