Description

Our spiritual wounds and weaknesses, E. Kent Rogers tells us, are truly blessings in disguise. They allow the Lord to enter our hearts and work through us, revealing his healing power to all.

In this practical guide to healing our inner selves, Rogers takes the reader on a journey through twelve of Jesusโ€™s miracles from the Gospels, examining the lessons that each can teach us. From the story of the Canaaniteโ€™s daughter (healing from feelings of unworthiness) through the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus (finding spiritual rebirth), Jesusโ€™s miracles trace a path of spiritual growth that is as powerful today as it was during his lifetime.

Written as a guide for group sharing, this book can also be used for personal study. Each chapter concludes with a guided meditation, a summary of the lessons taught by the miracle being discussed, suggested exercises, and questions for discussion or reflection. While the book grew from the authorโ€™s experience as a Swedenborgian, it can easily be used by seekers from any faith tradition.

About the Author

E. Kent Rogers has a BA in religion from Bryn Athyn College and an MS in mental health counseling from the University of Massachusetts. A series of events coinciding with a powerful spiritual experience led Kent, with the help of others, to create the Loving Arms Mission, a not-for-profit fundraising organization dedicated to creating and supporting New Church children’s homes. In 1999, Kent moved to Nepal to start the first of these orphanages. In 2002 he married Shovha Budhathoki, a co-worker and Nepali national. Loving Arms Mission has since begun supporting a second children’s home in Nepal and a larger orphanage in Kenya.

Reviews

“It is a common conceit among theologians that biblical miracles, inasmuch as they diverge from natural law, are invented and imagined stories aimed toward building up the faithful. Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), Swedish philosopher and theologian, devised a system of thought that easily accommodated the miraculous, explaining and enlarging upon the scriptural accounts in a deeply personal and profoundly meaningful way.

Rogers, a graduate of Bryn Athyn College (a Swedenborgian institution) and founder of Loving Arms Mission, has set out to translate into contemporary metaphor the way Swedenborg’s understandings of the inner meaning of scripture can transform the miracle stories into powerful lessons for today’s spiritual seekers.

Categorizing into several areas, such as Healing from Lack of Forgiveness and Healing from Doubt, the author lays out a thoughtful path toward self-healing, guiding the reader toward wholeness. In a day when books on personal growth and remediation fill bookstore shelves, this marvelous volume can fill a need for a truly spiritual and solidly biblical approach to personal growth.”
