Exodus Chapters 1 โ€“ 8

By Emanuel Swedenborg
Translated by Lisa Hyatt Cooper

Secrets of Heaven Volume 10: The Portable New Century Editionย by Emanuel Swedenborg presents the meaning behind the words of Exodus chapters 1โ€“8, decoding the spiritual significance of key eventsโ€”including the oppression of the Israelites, the birth and calling of Moses, and the first plagues upon Egypt. Using โ€œcorrespondences,โ€ Swedenborg connects these stories to the struggles of the human soul, the process of spiritual rebirth, and the challenges of embracing divine truth. Description

In Secrets of Heaven Volume 10, Swedenborg reveals the inner meaning of biblical stories using what he calls “correspondences.” Below are three examples from this volume.ย

Baby Moses Hidden in a Basket

When Moses is placed in a basket and hidden among the reeds of the Nile (Exodus 2), Swedenborg unpacks this iconic moment as a metaphor for divine truth being born within usโ€”but initially concealed.

The river represents worldly falsities and confusion, while the basket covered in tar and pitch reflects how, early in our spiritual awakening, truth is wrapped in external, imperfect layers. Yet, like Moses, this truth is protected by divine care until it grows strong enough to emerge. For Swedenborg, this story becomes a tender image of how our spiritual understanding often begins quietly, even hidden, before it transforms us.

The Midwives of Egypt: Protecting Innocence and Truth

A second example is Swedenborg’s understanding of the story of Pharaoh commanding the Hebrew midwives to kill newborn boys (Exodus 1), Swedenborg reveals a spiritual struggle that resonates beyond the literal. He explains that the “sons” represent truths being born within the human mind, while the oppressive Egyptian king symbolizes worldly knowledge corrupted by selfishness and materialism.

The midwivesโ€™ defianceโ€”sparing the boysโ€”symbolizes moments in our spiritual journey when simple, humble forms of goodness within us protect truth from being destroyed by worldly cynicism. Swedenborg shows how even when external pressures push us toward spiritual compromise, there is a divine force ensuring that innocence and truth survive.

Teachings on Neighborly Love: Who Is My Neighbor?

In his “Teachings on Neighborly Love” that frame the bookโ€™s biblical exposition, Swedenborg offers a profound rethinking of a well-known Christian concept. Rather than seeing “neighbor” as simply anyone in need, he explains that our neighbor is the goodness within othersโ€”goodness that comes from the Lord.

He describes how acting in love means discerning how best to serve, recognizing that helping someone committed to harming others is different from uplifting those pursuing good. Itโ€™s a nuanced, soul-searching teaching that asks readers to reconsider the purpose and depth of their kindness.

Presented in a clear, modern translation, this Portable New Century Edition offers an accessible entry point to Swedenborgโ€™s visionary theology. Since its original publication in Neo-Latin as Arcana Coelestia in the mid-1700s, Swedenborgโ€™s Secrets of Heaven series has been providing a compelling perspective on the hidden wisdom within scripture to biblical scholars, spiritual seekers, and individuals exploring the deeper layers of faith.

About the Author

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a Swedish scientist, theologian, and mystic, and one of Europe’s foremost scientific minds. His early work included pioneering contributions to neuroscience, crystallography, and astronomy. His scientific treatises on metallurgy remained in use well into the 20th century.

At the age of 56, Swedenborg underwent a profound spiritual awakening that transformed his life’s direction. Beginning with dreams, he suddenly had the ability to communicate with angels, spirits, and beings from other realms. Following this experience, he devoted the rest of his life to theological writings and spiritual explorations.

His most influential works include Heaven and Hell, Divine Love and Wisdom, and Divine Providence, which detail his extensive visions of the afterlife and propose a comprehensive theory of correspondence between the natural and spiritual worlds. His eight-volume masterwork Arcana Coelestia (Secrets of Heaven) stands as one of history’s most comprehensive spiritual interpretations of the Bible, offering an exhaustive verse-by-verse analysis of Genesis and Exodus.

Swedenborg never established a church himself, but his ideas inspired the formation of the New Church (Swedenborgian) movement after his death. His writings influenced numerous luminaries including William Blake, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Carl Jung, and Helen Keller, who called him “one of the greatest geniuses of Christendom.”

Swedenborg remains a fascinating figure who bridged the scientific revolution and spiritual inquiry, leaving a legacy that continues to engage scholars, theologians, and spiritual seekers worldwide.

Lisa Hyatt Cooper is translator of the fifteen-volumeย Secrets of Heavenย for the Swedenborg Foundationโ€™s New Century Edition of the Works of Emanuel Swedenborg. Her past publications include a Latin edition of Swedenborgโ€™s workย Other Planets.ย She contributed translations toย Debates with Devilsย by Donald L. Rose and was the main consultant for five of the twelve volumes of John Elliottโ€™s translation ofย Arcana Caelestia,ย published by the Swedenborg Society in London.

Reviews

โ€œ[Swedenborg was] a man of great and indisputable cultivation, strong mathematical intellect, and the most pious seraphic turn of mind; a man beautiful, loveable and tragical to me, with many thoughts in him, which when I interpret them for myself I find to belong to the high and perennial in human thought.โ€ โ€”Thomas Carlyle, Letter to Emma Ridsdale, November 13, 1852
