The Swedenborg Foundation Goes to Convention

The Swedenborg Foundation attended the 189th session of the General Convention of the New Jerusalem from June 26 through June 30, 2013. Convention this year was held at Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio.

Operations Manager Morgan Beard and Membership and Development Coordinator Brian Mann offered a selection of new releases and perennially popular titles for sale at the Foundation booth.

On Friday, Morgan gave a brief presentation about the ways in which the Swedenborg Foundation is working to increase engagement with Swedenborg’s writings and ideas. Some of the highlights include the launch of our new website, which features free and low-cost e-book downloads, increased presence in social media through the Heaven and Hell Facebook community, and our new series of short YouTube videos that explore spiritual topics through a Swedenborgian lens. The most popular video to date, “You Are the Lungs,” was shown to the group and received hearty applause.

On Saturday, Convention attendees were invited to take an Urbana Spiritual Heritage Tour. The tour included stops on the Urbana University campus including The Swedenborg Library:

and The Johnny Appleseed Museum.

The tour concluded at the Richards-Sewall House for a light reception complete with chamber music and croquet. Rev. Frank Sewall was the pastor of the Glendale and Urbana Churches, as well as the president of Urbana University. He was the father of artist Alice Archer Sewall James, founder of the Urbana Movement, who grew up in the house.
