A Profound Inquiry into the Layers of Human Consciousness

By Wilson Van Dusen

In The Natural Depth in Man, Wilson Van Dusen offers readers a rare and insightful exploration into the deeper dimensions of human consciousness. Drawing from his background in clinical psychology, Van Dusen leads us through a reflective journey into the human mind, likening it to a vast castle filled with unexplored rooms, each holding insights into our psyche. His work is grounded in the belief that beneath the surface of everyday thoughts and actions lies a wealth of untapped depth—rich in meaning, symbolism, and spiritual potential. Readers of Jung will feel at home and inspired by the territories explored within Van Dusen’s works.

Throughout the book, Van Dusen masterfully blends psychology, phenomenology, and mystical thought to uncover the natural, often overlooked, aspects of human experience. His exploration touches on dreams, fantasies, hallucinations, and the mystical state, while also investigating more mundane, yet mysterious, experiences like ordinary thoughts and feelings.

Written with clarity and compassion, The Natural Depth in Man provides a framework for readers to reflect on their own minds and engage with the profound layers of experience that shape their lives. It is both a guide and a companion on the journey toward greater self-understanding and spiritual awareness.

Description

The Natural Depth in Man by Wilson Van Dusen delves into the often uncharted territories of the human mind, offering readers a profound exploration of the depths of consciousness. Through a combination of psychological insight and spiritual reflection, Van Dusen reveals the layered nature of human experience, showing that much of what we perceive as ordinary is actually a gateway to deeper understanding. Informed by the author’s years of research into clinical psychology, particularly his work with individuals experiencing schizophrenia, this work provides a unique perspective on the psyche’s capacity to hold vast, often hidden, worlds within it.

Van Dusen uses a powerful metaphor throughout the book: the mind as a castle filled with unexplored rooms. He explains that many of us only inhabit a small portion of this castle, unaware of the rich, expansive inner life that lies just beyond the familiar. This castle is not only a psychological space but also a spiritual one, containing universal truths that transcend cultural and doctrinal boundaries. Van Dusen’s reflections draw heavily on his study of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose writings on the nature of spiritual reality provide a significant foundation for his work.

In this exploration, Van Dusen examines various layers of the human experience, from the simple yet often misunderstood process of everyday thoughts and feelings, to the more exotic phenomena of dreams, hallucinations, and mystical experiences. He does not merely categorize these experiences; instead, he invites readers to approach them with a sense of curiosity and reverence, suggesting that all of our mental and emotional states offer valuable insights into our deeper selves.

One of the key themes of the book is the “natural depth” inherent in every person. Van Dusen argues that this depth is a fundamental part of what it means to be human, and that it is accessible to anyone willing to look inward. By understanding our own minds, we can begin to see patterns, symbols, and feelings that speak to universal truths about life, love, and the divine. He encourages readers to trust in the natural processes of their own minds, believing that the psyche has a wisdom and lawfulness of its own that can guide us toward greater self-awareness and spiritual awakening.

Van Dusen’s writing is both accessible and profound, combining the rigor of psychological inquiry with the sensitivity of a mystic. He does not shy away from the complexities of the mind but approaches them with a sense of playfulness and wonder, making even the most intricate aspects of human experience feel approachable and meaningful. His reflections on the symbolic nature of dreams, the transformative power of self-reflection, and the subtle dimensions of mystical experience offer readers practical ways to engage with their own inner lives.

The book also touches on broader questions about the nature of reality, the role of self-awareness in personal growth, and the connection between the individual psyche and the greater spiritual universe. Van Dusen’s deep empathy for the human condition shines through in his compassionate exploration of topics like madness, hallucinations, and the often-overlooked beauty in everyday experiences.

Ultimately, The Natural Depth in Man is more than a psychological treatise—it is an invitation to explore the vast, uncharted landscapes of the human soul. Van Dusen’s work encourages readers to embrace the unknown, to look beyond the surface of their daily lives, and to seek out the natural depth within themselves. Whether you are a seeker on the spiritual path, a student of psychology, or simply curious about the workings of the mind, this book offers a meaningful and enriching guide to the inner world we all inhabit.
