Ten Commandments: The Secrets of Spiritual Growth Found in God’s Principles for Living is now available from the Swedenborg Foundation.
The book is a compilation of Emanuel Swedenborg’s commentary on the Ten Commandments, drawn from four major sources: Secrets of Heaven, Revelation Explained (traditionally published as Apocalypse Explained), True Christianity, and the short work Life. Although each of the passages in Ten Commandments has been translated and published previously, this is the first time that these four texts have been collected in a single volume.
Swedenborg considered the Ten Commandments to be the cornerstone of spiritual growth—a list of the bad behaviors we need to root out of ourselves if we want to grow and become more loving people. He perceived much deeper spiritual meanings beneath the literal text of the commandments, and the commentaries collected in this book give students and seekers the opportunity to compare the insights he gained across a seventeen-year span.
Ten Commandments features translations from the New Century Edition of the Works of Emanuel Swedenborg (NCE)—a modern, in-progress translation of Swedenborg’s theological works. Where NCE translations were not available, fresh translations of Swedenborg’s work done in a comparable style make Swedenborg’s thought more accessible than ever before.
